In light of the current COVID-19 environment, the UK and Irish payments industry has taken the decision to increase the contactless limit for Visa and Mastercard cards. The move has been done to help reduce physical contact with keypads on chip and pin machines due to the coronavirus crisis. It is hoped the increased limit will help in the fight against Covid-19.

To support UKI businesses in moving towards cashless payments, Orbis Tech are working closely with their integrated card machine partners and Orbis Tech customers across industry verticals to ensure contactless limits from €30 to €50 in Ireland and from £30 to £45 in the UK happen.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said the move would begin on April 1, 2020, but warned that implementation in some shops may take longer. If you are an Orbis Tech customer with an integrated card machine and want more information then please contact us (see email address below) for further information. BRC head of payments policy, stated recently in the press: “The last contactless limit increase to £30 took two years to implement but, given the extraordinary circumstances we face today, this new £45 limit will be rolled-out from next week.’’

Some businesses will take longer to make the necessary changes, given the strain they’re under. In the meantime, most customers can continue to make contactless payments for higher amounts using their smart phone.
